Do you have any questions about how to charge your electric car at home?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.

Electric vehicle manufacturers usually supply a cable that connects to a normal household socket. However, this cable should be used with caution and for occasional charges as it is necessary to select a charge load that can be supported by the electrical installation. If this power is not selected, the domestic socket may overheat and even cause major problems. This is why international standards and protocols have been established that allow safe and universal charging through the use of charging points. These have the following advantages:

1. Security: A Charging Point uses a pilot control function for data transmission between the vehicle and the charging equipment itself, which ensures maximum safety conditions throughout the charging process in the event of any extraordinary situation such as overheating of the batteries, unexpected disconnection or breakage of the charging cable, among others, thus protecting the user, the home's electrical installation and the vehicle itself.

2. Convenience: With Iberdrola Green Charging, you can have a Charging Point in your garage to conveniently charge your vehicle's batteries, using the charging cable integrated in the equipment itself, and without having to use the occasional charging cable provided by the vehicle manufacturer each time. Simply connect the Charging Point cable to the vehicle, and you're ready to go!

3. Charging time: To charge up more quickly, electric cars are designed to demand more power than a household switch can take for a prolonger time. Electric vehicle manufacturers recommend that charging is usually carried out through a charging point, and that a domestic socket is only used occasionally.

The electrical installation must comply with current regulations, so it must be adapted. Electric vehicles demand significant power in the charging process, which is why the Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulations and specifically ITC-BT 52 establish a series of safety requirements to ensure that the installation is correct and has all the necessary elements to protect people, the vehicle and the home itself. As with other household equipment such as air conditioning, electric heating or the tumble dryer, the charging point must be supplied using an exclusive circuit independent of the rest of the loads, correctly sized for the expected load, and equipped with specific protections against direct and indirect contacts, overcurrents and overvoltages. The safety requirements for electrical installations are independent of the type of vehicle to be charged - the regulation does not differentiate between electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, the power at which it is to be charged, or the charging system used (domestic socket or charging point).

Yes, as long as the charging point is compatible with the type of vehicle to be charged. Our charging points are valid for both for cars and for motorcycles.

If the charging point is installed in a single-family home with an integrated garage, a new electricity supply contract is not required.
If the charging point is installed in a community garage and this is in the same building as the house, a priori, a new power supply contract will not be required either.

This depends on the contracted power, the characteristics of the vehicle and when the charging is carried out. At Iberdrola we advise you to charge at night when you are using less electricity at home. If you want to charge during the day, you may need to increase your power rating.

The Commonhold Property Act (Ley de Propiedad Horizontal) has been amended for easier installation of charging points in communal garages. Therefore, permission from your community of neighbours is no longer needed before you install the electrical infrastructure in common spaces, it is enough for you to inform your neighbours of the installation that is to be carried out. Iberdrola advises on and manages, if you so wish, the installation and the procedures necessary vis-à-vis your community of neighbours.

The Electricity Plan for the Electric Vehicle Plan comes from 100% renewable sources, as established by European Directive 2001/77/EC, which prevents the emission of greenhouse gases. Wind, solar and hydropower are considered 100% renewable sources. If you charge with the Electric Vehicle Plan, not only will you avoid emissions on your journeys, but you will also for your energy generation.
