What does it involve?

This audit analyses the energy efficiency of the equipment that consumes electricity and fossil fuels, the way in which the installations are used, the energy bills, etc.

The goal is to improve the energy efficiency of existing processes and installations while also identifying energy-saving and efficiency improvements. The audit identifies possible savings first, then selects the best solutions and conducts a technical and economic analysis.

Spanish Royal Decree requirements

The audits are carried out in accordance with the Spanish Royal Decree 56/2016 and meet the requirements of UNE-EN 16247-1: Energy audits standards. General requirements; UNE-EN 16247-2: Energy audits. Buildings; UNE-EN 16247-3: Energy audits. Processes; UNE-EN 16247-4: Energy audits. Transmission.

The Spanish Royal Decree 56/2016 of 12 February 2016, partially transposing Directive 2012/27/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 October 2012, whereby large companies are obliged to carry out an energy audit.

Large companies, defined as those with at least 250 employees or a revenue of more than 50 million Euro and a balance sheet of more than 43 million Euro, are required to conduct an energy audit. This category also includes groups of companies which, taking into account the aggregate figures of all the companies forming the consolidated group, meet the requirements of a large company.

The energy audit must cover at least 85% of the total final energy consumption of all facilities located on the national territory that are part of the industrial, commercial, and service operations that these companies and groups manage in the course of developing their economic activity.


It must be carried out in accordance with UNE-EN 16247-1: Energy audits standards: General requirements; UNE-EN 16247-2: Energy audits. Buildings; UNE-EN 16247-3: Energy audits. Processes; UNE-EN 16247-4: Energy audits. Transmission.

The deadline for completing the energy audit is 14 of November, 2016, assuming it has not been completed in the previous four years (meeting the requirements of this Spanish Royal Decree).


Thereafter, unless they have adopted an energy or environmental management system approved by an independent organisation in accordance with international standards, liable parties are required to undertake an energy audit every four years from the date of the previous audit.
