GRIÑÁN AND GALÁN OPEN EL ANDÉVALO WIND FARM IN HUELVA – THE LARGEST RENEWABLES FACILITY IN CONTINENTAL EUROPE

  • IBERDROLA RENOVABLES acquires El Andévalo from Gamesa within the framework agreement for the sale of wind farms in Andalusia signed by the two companies in 2005
  • The president of the Andalusian regional government and the IBERDROLA RENOVABLES chairman today presided over the official opening of the eight farms making up this wind facility in Huelva with total capacity of 292 MW
  • The opening of this complex has brought a significant improvement in grid connections between Spain and Portugal
  • The installation secures IBERDROLA RENOVABLES’ position as the leading company in the Andalusian renewables sector, with 851 MW, and overall in Spain, where it now has capacity of more than 5,700 MW

The president of the Andalusian regional government, José Antonio Griñán, and the chairman of IBERDROLA RENOVABLES, Ignacio Galán, today presided over the opening ceremony of the El Andévalo wind farm in Huelva, the largest renewables facility in Continental Europe.

During the ceremony, Galán stated that, “today’s opening in Huelva represents yet another example of our deep-seated commitment to clean energy and to Andalusia, a region with which IBERDROLA has very close ties”.

El Andévalo, commissioned in 2010, is located between the towns of El Almendro, Alosno, San Silvestre and Puebla de Guzmán, in the south of the province of Huelva. The facility has installed capacity of 292 MW and annual output equivalent to the power consumption of more than 140,000 households. It will prevent the emission of 510,000 tonnes of CO2.

IBERDROLA RENOVABLES has acquired El Andévalo from Gamesa, as part of the global agreement for the sale of wind farms in Andalusia signed by the two companies in 2005, which envisaged the transfer of total capacity of 600 MW.

The facility contains eight wind farms: Majal Alto (50 MW), Los Lirios (48 MW), El Saucito (30MW), El Centenar (40 MW), La Tallisca (40 MW), La Retuerta (38 MW), Las Cabezas (18 MW) and Valdefuentes (28 MW). All these wind farms feature Gamesa technology; specifically its G90 and G58 wind turbines, with unit capacity of 2 MW and 0.85 MW respectively.

Access to the grid from these wind farms has been secured with the construction by IBERDROLA Ingeniería y Construcción of a new 120 km transmission line between Puebla de Guzmán and Portugal, making this complex a strategic link in electricity interconnection between Spain and its neighbour.

The facility provides a significant socio-economic boost to the region as it has created 50 direct wind farm maintenance and operation jobs, after employing an average of over a 400 people in its construction.

Today, there is only one wind facility in Europe with greater capacity than El Andévalo: The 322 MW Whitelee wind power complex in Scotland, also owned by IBERDROLA RENOVABLES.

Leader in Andalusia and in Spain

This new facility secures IBERDROLA RENOVABLES’ position as the leading company in the Andalusian renewables sector, with installed capacity of 851 MW, and overall in Spain, where its capacity now exceeds 5,700 MW.

With operations in 23 countries, IBERDROLA RENOVABLES is the world leader(*) in its sector by both installed capacity (over 12,500 MW at the end of 2010) and output (over 25,400 million kWh between January and December last year).
