Accidental spills

Accidental spills are prevented and controlled by incident reporting systems and plans to minimise the risk of spills, which have been implemented at the generation and distribution facilities in various regions. These plans include emergency guidelines and procedures, periodic simulations, etc. Safety and containment measures are also adopted to minimise the damage. In Spain, for example, oil collection reservoirs have been built during the last eight years in case of a major discharge at the substations, thirteen of them during financial year 2012. It should be noted that the Regulated Business in the United Kingdom put into a practice a new environmental incident reporting and management system called “Cintellate”, which allows for a more efficient response to possible spills.

During the financial year, the IBERDROLA Group recorded twelve incidents of significant spills(*).  They occurred at the network facilities in the United Kingdom and consist of leaks of oil from transformers, insulating liquid from cables, and overflows from generators caused mainly by the theft of metals. The overflows were reported to either the Environment Agency (EA) or to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

There have also been minor accidents or incidents at the other companies belonging to the IBERDROLA Group that have not had permanent environmental impacts on the surroundings, for which reason it was not necessary to adopt corrective or compensatory measures. All cases were resolved in a satisfactory manner thanks to the emergency response team, and the contaminated area was cleaned with the management of any waste.

 

(*) The term “significant spill” means a spill that causes damage to the external surroundings of the facility and that must be reported to the governmental authorities. Small spills may occur within the facilities during their operation and maintenance, which are properly handled and also reported, if necessary.
