R&D in Renewables

Renewable energy, developing R&D projects to improve the efficiency of operating assets and the development and improvement of generation technologies. This includes the European TWENTIES project, the goal of which is to show that it is possible to integrate a massive amount of wind power into the network, through a demonstration at various wind parks in the south of Spain.

The Company has positioned itself as a global leader in the offshore area, where it develops more advanced and innovative projects, having requested three patents in this field. Significant projects include INNPACTO EMERGE and Etorgai FLOTTEK for the development of deep-water floating platform technology, CENIT AZIMUT deepening technical knowledge required for optimizing the development of offshore wind farms, and EERA DTOC, in which the Company collaborates in the design of tools for large-scale offshore wind farms. One should also note the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) initiative, a special programme promoted by the Carbon Trust (United Kingdom), in which specialist companies and engineering firms join forces, pooling their knowledge to find solutions that enable a reduction in the costs and risks of offshore technology, thus facilitating and speeding up their development in UK waters

In the field of marine energy (wave and tidal power), there are demonstration projects commenced in Scotland at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) where PELAMIS wave technology and HAMMERFEST tidal technology are being demonstrated at full scale. In the research field, there is the CENIT OCEAN LIDER project for the development of marine generation technologies, led by IBERDROLA Ingeniería, in which significant results have already been obtained with respect to the planning and installation of offshore generation parks and their environmental impact. In the wind resources area, the SOFTCOMPUTING project has been successfully completed and IBERDROLA leads the OPENFOAM project. Both projects are aimed at improving the forecast and analysis of this resource through the optimisation of models and the analysis of wind series. Also noteworthy are the large-scale projects concerning the development, evolution, and improvement of exploitation tools  (CORE, DOMINA and METEOFLOW), which, due to their success, have been implemented in the United Kingdom and the United States of America through a technology transfer agreement.
