Description of the technologies of the Short-listed Projects

Bright Earth Technologies / BrightCAES

Bright Energy Storage Technologies is developing a low-cost underwater energy storage system. Wind energy or surplus energy is stored by compressing air, storing it in flexible vessels at the bottom of a body of water, and releasing the air at peak times to generate electricity.  The vessel walls are thin and inexpensive.  A proprietary reversible air compressor runs at near-constant temperature and uses surrounding water as a heat sink and source, eliminating the need for fossil fuel. Bright energy storage has the potential to yield dramatic reductions in the net cost and availability of grid-scale energy storage, with the ability to store off-peak power directly from the grid.  It also has particularly significant synergies with offshore wind.  The system can be deployed offshore, in lakes, and in many reservoirs, with suitable sites close to 90% of the European energy load.

EcoVoltz / Powerbank

EcoVoltz is developing a grid-scale energy storage system based on a flow-battery.  More specifically, EcoVoltz are developing a low cost flow battery that exceeds the performance of those currently available.  They are driving toward the performance goals by exploring alternative chemistries that address the cost issues, and many of the performance issues, that are associated with the currently available technology and systems.

Westec Environmental Solutions (WES), LLC / WES

WES Absorber technology will provide unparalled reductions in absorber height and diameter and will allow for higher solvent loadings than current absorption columns with proprietary structured packing. Their absorber internals bring to market a product that will deliver significant cost, efficiency and weight savings to a wide variety of applications. WES Absorber technology applies to all industrial processes where gas/liquid mass transfer via absorption is required, aimed at optimizing the liquid gas mass transfer processes across a vast range of sectors and applications. These applications include CO2, capture, gas sweetening, gas dehydration, gas purification, and NOx and SOx removal in industries ranging from carbon capture, oil and gas, LNG production, mining, pharmaceutical, fertilizer production and general industrial markets.

Carbozyme / Captura de CO2 mediante membrana de enzimas

Carbozyme is in the final development stage of its state-of-the-art carbon dioxide separation and capture system. This patented design employs high efficiency, low energy, liquid membranes to capture and separate carbon dioxide (CO2) from a wide variety of gas streams with special emphasis on flue gas.The most important of the many potential applications for this technology is the capture of CO2 from electric power generation flue gas stacks. This is a fundamental technology for combating increases in greenhouse gases and thereby mitigating global warming.
