Over the last decade, IBERDROLA has deployed an innovative technology, both in management and in technology, which has led to its becoming the world leader and benchmark in R&D, thanks to the implementation of a common model for all the areas, collaboration with its technology suppliers and its encouragement of the culture of innovation.

This commitment to innovation, has resulted in a significant increase in investment over the last years. In 2012, the Group’s R&D activities accounted for 145 million euros.

IBERDROLA’s more than 150 R&D projects, distributed across the Group’s various business  units and companies, cover all operating areas –traditional and renewable energy generation,  distribution, engineering, IT and telecommunications– and extends to other non-technological  areas focused on new developments, business models, organisation, etc.

In Qatar, IBERDROLA has commenced the creation of its R&D technology centre on smart grids. In conjunction with the Qatari state electricity company, Kahramaa, a study will be carried out to analyse the feasibility of implementing a smart grid system and a pilot project to prepare the definitive installation of smart grids in Qatar will commence.
