IBERDROLA sailing TEAM sponsorship

The IBERDROLA Sailing Team has strengthened its position in elite competitive sailing by winning the European Championship in the Soto 40 class and the Audi Valencia Cup trophy.

For IBERDROLA, involved in the sport of sailing since 2005, Valencia is a fundamental setting where it has lived out some of its most important victories and where it carries out a large part of its sport and training activity. In the 32nd America’s Cup, the Desafío Español, sponsored by IBERDROLA, achieved a historical result by qualifying for the semi-finals. After a very disputed season in 2012, the team, lead by Agustín Zulueta, won again, this time in Levantine waters. Effort and consistency were the keys for a team that is already training to win in Chile at the coming sailing World Cup 2013.

The Company maintains the Base IBERDROLA TEAM in Valencia, which is fully operational from the sports point of view and also available for other types of events focused on various group’s of social interest, thus reasserting its commitment to the Valencia Region and its support of sailing, which reflects its main values: spirit of improvement and teamwork, respectful of the environment, and use of wind power, a clean source of energy that represents the core of the IBERDROLA Group's commitment.

From the sports point of view, in addition to housing and carrying out maintenance work on the boats, the Base IBERDROLA TEAM is used by both the IBERDROLA TEAM for its training, and by the Spanish Paralympic Sailing Team when it held its training for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The social aspect includes the SAILING WORKSHOPS, which are held throughout the year and are intended for groups of schoolchildren from the Valencia Region. At these workshops the children learn how to make reef knots, the nautical flags and their meaning, etc. The visit is complemented by an explanation on the esplanade of the current activity carried out at the Base, the history of the America’s Cup and the various facilities available. In 2011, more than 1,800 schoolchildren visited the Base IBERDROLA TEAM.
