IBERDROLA RENOVABLES, through subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables, has received today at a ceremony held at its Whitelee windfarm in Scotland, the Queen’s Award for its commitment to sustainability.
Keith Anderson, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, received the award from Guy Clark, Lord Lieutenant de Renfrewshire, the Queen’s personal representative in the county of Renfrewshire.
IBERDROLA RENOVABLES received this award for the start-up of the Whitelee windfarm, Europe’s largest. The award recognises excellence in habitat management and the promotion of local community involvement in the renewable project.
Keith Anderson said “We are honoured to have received the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development, and would like to thank the Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire for presenting the award. It is recognition of the hard work that has gone into every aspect of planning, delivering and running Europe’s largest windfarm and is a great credit to the hundreds of individuals who have worked very hard to make it possible”.
The Whitelee wind farm has 322 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity –which will be expanded to 539 MW- and is located south of Glasgow.Once expanded, in 2012, the windfarm will have an annual output equivalent to the electricity consumption of more than 300,000 households and will prevent the annual emission of 840,000 tonnes of CO2.
The wind farm is home to a learning centre since September 2009.This £2 million facility of IBERDROLA RENOVABLES is the first of its kind in the UK and has enabled a great many people to learn about renewable energies. It is also the focal point for sports enthusiasts (e.g. cyclists, horse riders and ramblers) who have taken advantage of the wind farm’s 90 kilometres of tracks.
The company is currently the leading developer and generator of onshore wind energy in the UK, with installed capacity of 932 MW.
The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are made annually and given only for the highest levels of excellence demonstrated in three categories: Innovation, international trade and sustainable development. HM Queen Elizabeth II makes the awards based on the advice of the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an advisory committee that includes representatives of government, industry and commerce, and the trade unions.
Electric vehicle recharging point
During the award ceremony, the company’s first electric vehicle charging point in Scotland and the first in the UK at a windfarm was switched on.
The electricity vehicle is one of the main targets of IBERDROLA’s R&D and innovation. The Group has also launched the Green Mobility Plan, an integral solution through which, for the first time in Spain, it sells electric vehicles and financing to customers, installs recharging stations, and provides a 100% renewable power supply.
