IBERDROLA has launched today the second edition of the Perseo Awards, which are designed to promote research in the energy sector through support for state-of-the-art initiatives that may help address future challenges in this field.
This initiative, whose first edition was highly successful, intends to promote budding projects and companies offering high technological and innovative value that involve a substantial advance in economic, environmental and social terms in relation to current solutions.
IBERDROLA has established two major categories in which Spanish and foreign companies may take part: innovative biomass technologies and new products for energy efficiency
The winners would be able to receive the financial support of the IBERDROLA Group for their projects, through the Perseo Fund's shareholding in their capital. Thus, the winning initiatives can receive up to four million euros.
Companies interested in taking part in the 2nd Edition of the Perseo Technological Innovation Awards can submit their projects until 15 June on this website, where they can also find out about all the details of this call.
Once again this year, the Perseo Fund Investment Committee, who will be assisted by external experts, will be in charge of selecting the winners. It will take into account the profile of the candidates and their experience, conduct a scientific assessment of the project from the point of view of innovation, and analyse its financial, environmental and social feasibility.
IBERDROLA will announce the winners on its website about three months after the closing of the application submission period.
Success of the first edition of the Perseo Awards
Last February, IBERDROLA presented the 1st Perseo Awards in two categories: CO2 capture and storage and clean combustion technologies, where Westec Environmental Solutions (United Kingdom) was selected as the winner and Carbozyme (New Jersey) won the second prize, and energy storage technologies aimed at electrical grid use, where the winner was Bright Energy Storage Technologies (Colorado) and the second prize went to Ecovoltz (California).
These Perseo Awards are part of the Company's firm commitment to innovation and are further proof of its efforts to remain at the technological forefront with a view to addressing the present and future challenges facing the energy sector.
Thus, IBERDROLA invested €130 million in R&D in 2010, 44% more than in the previous year. The Company earmarked this investment to over 150 projects.
The Company's initiatives in this area have focused on improving energy efficiency, quality of supply and sustainable development. Thus, IBERDROLA has implemented initiatives related to renewable energies, electric vehicles, smart grids or CO2 emission capture.
