Eduardo Frei, the former president and current candidate for the presidency of Chile, today visited IBERDROLA RENOVABLES’ El Romeral wind farm and the company’s Renewable Energies Operations Centre in Toledo (CORE).
The Chilean presidential candidate is visiting to experience first-hand the huge strides made in the field of renewable energies in Castilla-La Mancha, a region known worldwide for its expertise in the development of new clean energy sources.
Mr Frei was accompanied by the Minister for Industry, Energy and the Environment of the region of Castilla-La Mancha, Paula Fernández, the region’s Director General for Industry, Benito Montiel, IBERDROLA Renovables’ manager for Spain, Víctor M. Rodríguez, and the Adviser for International Affairs to the Chairman of IBERDROLA, Ramón de Miguel
In the morning Mr Frei and his companions visited IBERDROLA RENOVABLES’ El Romeral wind farm. This facility, located in Villacaños in Toledo province, was built by the company in 2002 and has a capacity of around 32 MW delivered by 37 wind turbines, each with an output of 850 kilovolts (kW).
The party then moved on to the Renewable Energies Operations Centre in Toledo (CORE), a state-of-the-art facility which carries out real-time monitoring of all IBERDROLA RENOVABLES’ installations worldwide.
This centre controls, manages and carries out maintenance work on all IBERDROLA RENOVABLES’ wind farms, mini hydro power stations and associated substations in real time, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
The operations centre came on stream in July 2003 with the aim of optimising the technical management and economic performance of the company’s facilities, thereby enhancing the quality of the renewable energy supplied. The centre gives additional stability to the national electricity grid, since it provides greater control over wind energy, adapting to the new operational requirements of the network caused by the high penetration ratio of wind energy in the system.
The operations centre has generated huge interest among all social agents and has been visited on numerous occasions by politicians, energy specialists and companies from around the globe. The location of this facility in Toledo underlines the commitment of IBERDROLA RENOVABLES to the development of clean energy sources in Castilla-La Mancha, where it has so far invested more than €2bn.
IBERDROLA RENOVABLES is the leading developer of renewable energies in this
region, with a capacity of 1,930 megawatts (MW). Of this figure, 1,835 MW
corresponds to the company’s wind farms, with its 26 mini-hydro facilities
accounting for 95 MW. This output meets the annual energy requirements of
approximately three million people.
