In an event attended by company chairman, Ignacio Galán, held in Davos (Switzerland) during the World Economic Forum, IBERDROLA was included in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World index for the fourth consecutive year.
IBERDROLA is one of three Spanish companies included in the list compiled by Canadian magazine Corporate Knights, which specialises in corporate social responsibility, and by sustainability research firm, Innovest Strategic Value Advisors
This prestigious international ranking analyses various aspects of the most important companies in the world, in particular their exceptional capacity to address their sector-specific environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities.
The Global 100 is a list of publicly-traded, companies that have the best developed abilities to manage the environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and opportunities they face. The companies were selected from the Innovest universe of around 1,800 securities comprising the MSCI World Index, S&P 500, EuroStoxx and FTSE 350 indices.
Speaking at Davos, Matthew Kiernand, CEO of Innovest stated that “the companies included in this list will continue to achieve success, even in the midst of the current global financial crisis, thanks to sound management ensuring they can adapt to changes and new economic situations”.
Toby Heaps, Editor of Corporate Knights magazine, said “while markets go up
and down, companies like the Global 100 members that prudently take care of
the interests of all their stakeholders, offer the best bet for society and
investors in the long term”.
Global leader in the
electricity sector, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers
This international acknowledgement comes in the same week that PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and Sustainable Management (SAM) named IBERDROLA as the top power company in their Sustainability Yearbook 2009.
Not only did IBERDROLA receive the Gold Class distinction as the most sustainable company in its sector, but it was also included in the SAM Sector Leaders 2009 general ranking of firms which have best performed in the areas of corporate responsibility and sustainability worldwide.
IBERDROLA won this plaudit based on analysis carried out by SAM and PWC of over 100 companies in the power sector. When compiling this report both companies took into consideration the financial, environmental and social aspects of all companies.
For utilities in particular, the yearbook highlights the various strategies taken to tackle the liberalisation of the electricity markets, measures taken to combat global warming as well as support for renewable energies, a diversified generation mix and energy efficiency initiatives.
The accolades received by IBERDROLA underscore the company’s commitment to
sustainable development, one of its distinguishing characteristics, which has
seen it included in the most prestigious global indices, such as the Dow Jones
Sustainability Index (DJSI), in which it has been listed since 2000 and where
it ranked first in 2008 in the utilities category.
