The Fundación Iberdrola coordinates the social activities of the Iberdrola Group in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Portugal and Latin America. In line with the company's commitment to enhancing people's quality of life in the areas where it operates, the foundation focuses on the fields of energy sustainability, art & culture, solidarity and social action.
The lines of action of Fundación Iberdrola are defined in its Steering Plan for the 2012-2014 period. This commitment with the communities where the company operates is also translated into joint initiatives with relevant administrative bodies and civil society.
In the field of energy development, the Fundación Iberdrola concentrates most of its efforts on knowledge transmission in order to progress towards a sustainable energy model. In this regard, and following the success of previous calls for applications, the foundation launched a new edition of its research scholarships and grants for this academic year, which will benefit 50 students.
To be specific, the foundation announced the III Call for Scholarships for Master's Degrees in Energy and Environment Studies in Spain; the II Call for Scholarships for Master's Degrees in Energy and Environment Studies in the United Kingdom; and the II Call for Scholarships for Research in Energy and Environment Studies.
The foundation wishes to contribute towards excellence in training in the field of energy, with a special focus on fostering renewables, protecting the environment, combating climate change and promoting the efficiency of the energy system.
In the area of cooperation and solidarity, the organisation focuses its activities on contributing towards the well-being and quality of life of groups at risk of social exclusion, via the Energy for Solidarity initiative. In line with the corporate responsibility strategy of the Iberdrola group, this grants scheme (now in its third edition) provides support to initiatives that combat poverty and involve disadvantaged people in protecting the environment, as well as to projects in the welfare or socio-educational fields.
Commitment to art
The Steering Plan defines cultural development as another of the foundation's main areas of concern. In the context of the Fundación Iberdrola's commitment to art, as one of the most important elements in the heritage of mankind, mention should be made of its role as 'Supporting Member of the Prado Museum', as it has been one of the main Benefactors since November 2010.
Ignacio Galán, Chairman of Iberdrola and Trustee of the foundation, recently became a member of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Prado Museum. This appointment was part of the modernisation process underway at the art gallery and sought to acknowledge the role of the Fundación Iberdrola.
The organisation's collaboration with the national art gallery focuses on backing its conservation and restoration programme, which is among the most prestigious worldwide.
Thanks to the support of Fundación Iberdrola, the Prado Museum has restored important works of art, such as the copy of La Gioconda, the Adam and Eve panels by Albrecht Dürer; the sculptural ensemble Nero and Séneca by Eduardo Barrón; the equestrian portraits Phillip III on Horseback and Margaret of Austria on Horseback, by Diego Velázquez; the Roman sculpture Sleeping Ariadne; and The Wine of St. Martin's Day by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
The collaboration agreement between the two bodies also contemplates the granting of scholarships for research into restoration. This is part of the foundation's plan to provide grants for Master's and Doctorate degrees, with a view to complementing the training of future experts and fostering research in the field of research.
The Fundación Iberdrola, with Manuel Marín as Chairman, is involved in various historic-artistic heritage conservation projects. Some of the highlights among these are the Atlantic Romanesque Heritage Restoration Programme, entered into with the Portuguese Ministry of Culture and the Regional Government of Castile and León, to restore Romanesque temples located in the vicinity of the rivers Duero and Támega, or funding and designing the lighting for emblematic heritage buildings.
