With a view towards reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and helping to combat climate change, Iberdrola is firmly committed towards decisively promoting the most environmentally friendly electricity generation technologies.

As a result of its efforts in this field, the company had an installed capacity of over 14,000 megawatts from renewable sources (mostly wind power) at the close of the first quarter of 2012.  It is also promoting new environmentally friendly technologies, such as offshore wind power or marine energies (waves and currents).

As part of the efforts made by the company towards reducing emissions, it approved a Policy on Combating Climate Change in 2010.  Iberdrola was the first Spanish electric utility to adopt a standard of this kind, with the following main purposes: to support the international agreements that are needed to tackle this environmental problem, promote the development of technologies that are efficient from the perspective of greenhouse gas emissions, foster efficient energy use and heighten the awareness of its suppliers, employees and customers regarding responsible energy consumption.

Iberdrola was also the first Spanish company to obtain a certificate from the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR) for its greenhouse gas emissions inventory, according to the terms of the UNE ISO 14064-1:2006 standard.

With a view to raising public awareness of this environmental problem, the group runs the website www.contracambioclimatico.com, where it explains its commitment to bringing down CO2 emissions, promotes the various initiatives it sets up in this regard and offers users a tool to calculate their carbon footprint.

This commitment has earned IBERDROLA various accolades: it is the only international electric utility to have been included in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) since the first edition, the only Spanish electric utility to have been included in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World 2012 and it was recently awarded Gold Class ranking in The Sustainability Yearbook 2012, which was drawn up by KPMG and SAM and presented during the World Economic Forum in Davos.
