IBERDROLA Group has Environmental Management Systems (EMS) specific to the businesses and processeses, based on the UNE-EN-ISO 14001:2004 and EMAS standard, distributed and implemented throughout much of their organizations, what are allowing for a reduction in environmental risks, improvement in the management of resources, and optimisation of investments and costs. In Spain, it has an Environmental Management System implemented and certified [PDF]Note (*) according to the Standard implemented in accordance with the UNE-EN ISO 14001:2004 standard, which was certified in 2006 and it is renewed every 3 years by the Spanish Standardisation and Certification Association (AENOR) and enables environmental risks to be minimised by improving resource management and optimising investments and costs.
The Global Environmental Management System includes the partial certifications existing at the electric power generation stations, both thermoelectric and hydroelectric, as well as management of all the facilities of the Networks and Renewable Energies businesses and the more than 200 Company buildings, therefore covering 100% of the following activities: electricity generation, distribution and marketing; gas transport, distribution and marketing; operation and maintenance of combined cycle thermoelectric power plants; and marketing of other products and services related to energy supply and usage in Spain.
This Global System defines the Environmental Guidelines, which align the environmental management activities carried out by the businesses with the Company's strategy. These Guidelines have been deployed throughout IBERDROLA as environmental goals and targets, including the allocation of responsibilities, resources and deadlines, and are as follows:
I. To improve the compatibility of IBERDROLA’s infrastructures with the environment.
II. Practices to reduce or eliminate the creation of emissions to atmosphere and prevent the spillage and contamination of water and soil.
III. Continuous improvement in the operational performance, increasing the energy efficiency and energy savings, to reduce the consumption of natural resources.
IV. Improve the management and control of generated waste, hazardous and No hazardous.
V. Environment management in to regulations, certifications, fees, and stakeholders collaboration, including their demands.
As regards Deregulated Business in Spain, progress has been made in the adherence of new power stations to the European environmental management and audit system EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) regulated by Regulations 761/2001 of the European Commission, certification is renewed annually.
In the United Kingdom, ScottishPower has environmental management systems certified in accordance with standard UNE-EN ISO 14001:2004 at nine electric power generation stations, including its distribution network. Two of them also display the EMAS logo. From 2011, the subsidiaries IBERDROLA Engineering and Construction U.K. and IBERDROLA Engineering and Construction Networks LTD have a certification system.
Also, the Renewable Business in United Kingdom maintains the certification for its own Environmental Management System (EMS), achieved in 2010, which covers activities included within and related to the development, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the renewable energy generation facilities in the United Kingdom.
Fom 2011, Klamath thermal power plant has a certificate in accordance with standard UNE-EN ISO 14001:2004. In 2015, IBERDROLA USA Networks has been certified as meeting the requirements of ISO 14001:2004 for project management and engineering for the design, construction and commissioning of electric & gas transmission and distribution assets, and planning of gas assets.
All combined cycle power stations in operation in Mexico and the cogeneration station Enertek have obtained environmental certification in accordance with standard UNE-EN ISO 14001:2004, and a committee has been set up in order to coordinate and review on a regular basis the environmental actions carried out and still pending.
The combined cycle power station Termopernambuco, has the environmental certification in accordance with standard UNE-EN ISO 14001:2004, also networks Elektro, Celpe and Cosern.
