IBERDROLA against climate change

IBERDROLA HAS SET AN AMBITIOUS NEW ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVE OF REDUCING THE INTENSITY OF ITS CO2 EMISSIONS TO BELOW 150 GRAMS PER kWh IN 2030, A LEVEL 50% LESS THAN ITS EMISSIONS IN 2007

  • The Company’s per kWh level is already 30% below the sector average in Europe
  •

We have reached a decisive juncture in our history: governments, companies and the society as a whole must join together around the globe to fight climate change. This was the goal of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21) that brought representatives from the different countries together to reach a new universal agreement on climate to limit the rise in the global temperature by less than 2ºC. Corporate participation is vital to achieve this target, in which the electricity sector plays an essential role, since it now has the renewable technologies capable of reducing emissions sustainably and efficiently.

Through this commitment to fighting climate change, IBERDROLA seeks to actively and decidedly contribute to a low-carbon sustainable future, an effort that will also drive the social and economic development by the creation of jobs and profit.

#JUST2CHALLENGE tells the story of the journey by IBERDROLA and the whole of society towards a better world where global warming is history. A world for everyone to live in, with electricity for all.

IBERDROLA took part part in the Paris Summit, where it delivered its manifesto as part of its goal to raise awareness. At the summit the company displayed the role of electricity in the global challenge to not exceed 2 degrees and the importance of the involvement of citizens in this challenge.

The anti-climate change strategy of IBERDROLA, currently leading the largest international indices, is based on the following main pillars:

  • Global bellwether for renewable energies with 25 GW installed. We are among Europe's most environmentally-friendly electricity utilities: 66% of our installed capacity is emissions free, which is 30% less than the average in the European electricity sector in terms of kWh.
  • Support for international negotiations and significant participation from the private sector.
  • The 50% reduction of the intensity of the 2007 level of CO2 emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.
